Christantus Uche Fuels Comfortable Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though entering their maiden continental adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding win that virtually secures them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another victory in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to seal direct passage to the knockout stages, particularly after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for several Palace's lesser-used players to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since joining on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, finding the net for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season proved outmatched even for a mostly second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Dominance Established from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal man did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for two robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a glaring chance, indicating there is still scope for development in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
